How I Get Through a Stack of Pleasure Reading

stack of pleasure reading

My pleasure reading is starting to pile up.

I've generally hovered between two extremes.

On the one hand, I never get around to reading anything, and I get piles like this.

On the other hand, sometimes I get too into a book, and end up throwing hours into it that should have been spent doing something else.

So, I've come up with a compromise method.

Now I combine my reading and eating times, and I devote myself to reading a minimum of a chapter per meal.  The chapter length varies depending on the type of book, but the rate is generally one to two chapters per sitting.  Not only that, I pace myself by taking only one bite per page, and chewing while I read through.  If I finish a chapter before I finish the food, then I go on to the next and stop at the end of that chapter.  I've found that this helps me slowly work through my books, and it also prevents me from getting too wrapped up in the book because I've tied the activity to something with organic start and stop points.  And as a bonus, it helps me eat more slowly.

Of course, every once in a while I end up breaking my own rules and staying awake late into the night while gorging myself on a sci-fi book or something.  But that can't be helped.
